* grade I lateral ankle sprains
* ankle fracture
* bilateral ankle sprains
* previous ankle ligament surgery
* neuromuscular disorders of the lower extremities
* rheumatoid arthritis,
* alcoholism,
* serious psychiatric or neurological illness
