* C-Peptide \> 1.5 ng/ml
* Able to come to the Minneapolis VA Medical Center on several occasions over 2-4 weeks
Exclusion Criteria
* hematologic abnormalities
* liver disease
* kidney disease
* congestive heart failure
* life threatening malignancies
