Eligibility Criteria

Inclusion Criteria

* All enrolled patients were recruited consecutively on the day of MICU admission and within 24 hours of the diagnosis of severe sepsis.

Exclusion Criteria

* Pregnancy,
* Age less than 18 years old, and
* Uncontrolled malignancy.
