* Patients with uncomplicated, essential hypertension

Exclusion Criteria

* Severe hypertension
* History of stroke, myocardial infarction, heart failure, chest pain, abnormal heart rhythm
* Liver, kidney, or pancreas disease
* Insulin dependent diabetes
* Allergy to certain medications used to treat high blood pressure
